Developing the Technical Workforce

Issue: Developing technical talent is vital for a technology-based organization. Talented engineers want to stay abreast of developments in their field of specialty, and they want to grow in their careers even without moving into leadership positions. An internal survey on perceptions of career development within the business resulted in a wake-up call for a systematic process, information and tools for development for the technical workforce.

Solution: Competency-based information about each technical function in the organization, its challenges, rewards, and where it fit in the career system was developed and made available throughout the business. Development Planning workshops and tools were made available for everyone and managers learned how they could support individual development. Development became a priority item in the performance management process.

Results: The process was so successful in accomplishing its goals regarding employee satisfaction and retention that it was replicated in organizational units across the business.
